3 Surefire Ways to Improve Your Time Off

Now that you’re hopefully seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, you can start to think about taking some time to recharge your batteries.  Make it count!  Done well, time off will actually help you become more successful.

Here are a few very simple strategies to supercharge the quality of your time away from the office:

  • Give everyone plenty of notice. Tell your key clients and staff that you will be away from the office prior to leaving.  Let them know several weeks before your planned time off.  Inform them that you’ll be “off the grid” for that entire time and you won’t have email or cell phone access.  Doing this will help to bring up any important business that needs your attention before you leave.
  • Actually leave the electronics behind. No computer, no cell phone.  Let your key staff know how to call your hotel/house using a good old fashioned land-line.  This is where most people go wrong.  Having the smart phone with you is so tempting and one email can mentally pull you back into the office.  Just leave it behind – you’ll survive.
  • Trust your staff. Leave detailed, written instructions.  Meet with them before you leave so that expectations are clear.  Let them use their judgement while you are away.

Your job is to leave and enjoy yourself. Your practice will be there when you get back.  Hang in there….it’s almost time.
