About This Practice
Currently, Cash flow to owner ranges between $ 400,000 to $ 600,000 per year and the owner hours are relatively low. The owner is able to take 9 – 12 weeks off a year.
This one-owner firm has a very laid-back management style and a focus on helping wealthy clients make good financial and tax planning decisions. There are a number of Investment Portfolio companies, as well as a fair bit of estate work. The owner has a “big 4” background (well…technically “big 8.”)
The firm takes exceptionally good care of these high net-worth clients; performing a variety of services and giving them ample time and attention. The service is high-touch with excellent communication/responsiveness. A CPA who likes to focus on client relationships and provide this boutique style of service could do very well in this practice.
Some clients are US citizens. The firm handles tax planning, compliance, financial and estate planning. However, no Investment management services are offered. Many of these clients have somewhat complex tax needs.
This a professional office with very friendly, hardworking and cooperative contractors. They work as needed on an hourly basis. Most of them have been with the firm for many years. They are well liked and produce quality work. Staff is independent and there is little oversight needed.
Client attrition is very low and they are very loyal. Clients are willing to pay good fees and the firm does not market. They are seeing good growth with referrals from existing clients and other professionals.
The Ideal Buyer
The current owner does not rush. The focus is on quality in contrast to efficiency. Clients like this patient, high-quality, boutique level of service and have no problem paying for it. The buyer for this practice would need to take great care in providing this quality of service and focus on good relationships. Many clients are long-term and have high expectations of personalized service and advice. The ideal buyer will be a CPA with very, very good tax experience, ideally from a larger firm with experience with the issues common to high net-worth clients. Experience with US tax would be helpful.
A cheerful, consistent professional with a good temperament could thrive in this practice. There is also plenty of opportunity for growth and systems improvements for an ambitious, energetic owner.
