Freedom – Why People Start or Buy Businesses

With Independence Day passing, the theme of freedom is top-of-mind. Ultimately, most people who are buying a business for themselves do it for the freedom. That was certainly true for me. I thoroughly enjoy the freedom I’ve earned by being in business for myself.

Every once in a while I get an itch to leave for the day, or a friend calls me to play golf or go do something fun.  And then there are times that I decide to take a long vacation…and guess what, I get to do that.  I get to decide.  I’ve done that for so long now, there is no going back.

That’s not to say it’s easy. In fact, freedom can also be a huge challenge.  Let me explain with a few examples.

Here is a short list of things a business owner has the freedom to do:

  • Set your own schedule
  • Overwork
  • Underwork
  • Make more money
  • Lose money
  • Make decisions
  • Make mistakes
  • Learn from mistakes
  • Learn from successes
  • Hire
  • Fire
  • Focus
  • Get distracted

Freedom is not being free of all rules. It’s not that at all. The beauty is you get to make the rules and live with your own decisions. Hopefully, you learn from your mistakes and make better rules for yourself as time goes by. Working for yourself takes discipline, hard-work, and luck never hurts…but it’s totally worth it if you are cut out that way.
